Artist Residency 2024

Keely Whitelaw

Keely is an aerialist who took a back route into artistic movement through a life of sport. To make sense of the untellable meaning she finds above the ground, she is engaged in doctoral research of kinesthetic consciousness to find pockets of expression in technically restrained movement.

During the residency, she worked to translate her aerial and climbing sensibilities to more horizontal planes and bring them to the particular craggy coast that has been moving her since her recent return to the island.

Keely performed during the Mayflies Performance Series in collaboration with Greg Bruce and is a Mayflies Digital artist.

She was one of our original Mayflies Digital Artists in 2020 and again in 2021.

Waves

This video marks the close of Keely’s Untellable Artist Residency, 2024. She experimented with material and form to translate some of her aerial work into something more terrestrial. She was interested in what it was to let her body and attention be taken by the waves, while gliding along a rocky landscape, up and into a small cave. Over the course of her residency, she spent time in both Lynn Panting’s Dance Studio as well as a small inlet in Pouch Cove, where this was filmed. She danced with Hilary Walsh, the footage was captured by Heather Rumancik, and the appropriately titled track Waves was composed and performed by Greg Bruce.
